Myself and the Professor have just returned from a windy (& wet) weekend at the seaside. Following on a family tradition from when I was very small, we spent 3 days with family in not so sunny Blackpool.
Along with the usual sights we had to visit the Grade 2 listed Winter Gardens which is currently undergoing major renovation work to restore the building to it’s former glory.
The Winter Gardens was first opened to the public on 11th July 1878. The original intention was “to place on the land a concert room, promenades, conservatories and other accessories calculated to convert the estate into a pleasant lounge, especially desirous during inclement days.” Over the years the scale and sheer architectural richness of the Winter Gardens has provided a vibrant experience for visitors to the building and it’s fantastic to see some of its former grandeur restored.
Here are a few pics (old & new) of the impessive building.
